 “What I read today, 06 July 2009, 0900-1200”

06 July 2009, this is the date I started my first class in university and that was “Integrated Studio I”. This date is quite special for me because I am going to remember it for the rest of my life. Well, special day, of course, followed by special events. Today, I had a special class. Why did I say so? It was because in this class we got a special task on special topic.

After our lecturer, Mr. Wan Burhannuddin Wan Abidin introduced us the studio masters, all students were given an assignment entitled “what I read today, 06 July 2009, 0900-1200". The first thing that came across my mind was “What? This is really a weird topic!!!!" Then, I started discussing with my friends. Everyone told me  different stories. I was so confused! Then, I made a decision. I will adapt my own "edition".

Here I begin about what I had read today …………………………………………...........................  From the first step I stepped in the Hall E48, the first words I read were

RUS101 INTEGRATED STUDIO

Integrating Architecture, Building Surveying, Building Technology,

Construction Management, Interior Design, Urban & Regional Planning & Quantity Surveying.

                                                                                        ( From http://www.hbp.usm.my/1b/100)

All of this was written on the board.

Then, I took my sit on the chair. After a few minutes, Mr. Wan started the class with a refreshing way by asking us a question that sounded “What is the meaning of read?”  I read the question, and then I started to ask myself what is/are the meaning of the word “read”.  But before I can think any answer for the question, Mr. Wan had shown us the 46 meaning of the word “read” and all of the meaning were presenting in a very tiny form. I can’t read it. Next, Mr. Wan explained to us what are intention, act and product. Of course, “intention, act and product” are also the words I had read.

Next, I also read about tools that we needed to have. For examples:

Tools

  1. Document - text, images (still, moving)
  2. Communicate - text, images, models:present, argue, show, exhibit-Negotiate
  3. Design - images, models, objects, prototypes, spaces, events, Happenings
  4. Construct - a page > a page in history
  5. Serve - bottom billion > top - ten

After that, Mr. Wan told us that we going to have 10 projects which will need us to apply all the “tools” that he had mentioned.

Furthermore, Mr. Wan showed us the name list of all the student of House, building, and planning by classified them into a few group like architecture(81), building surveying(15), building technology(23), and others. From the name list, I was able to read a few names like Mohammad, Mohd, Dick Son, Shankar A/L Ganesan, Umbeekee, David Joakim Chang Dai Vui, Fong Sum Yee, Foong Yew Jin, Tan Shen Haw and Tan Joon Fei. Mr. Wan brought our attention to all of this names.

After that, we were told about the 14 weeks program, and that all I can read because the other information about the program was presented in unclear form. Then, Mr. Wan introduced all the lecturers who are responsible to teach us. Following were the lecturer’s name that I had read:

  1. Mr. Wan Burhanuddin ( Architecture)
  2. Mr. Mohd Najib ( Architecture)
  3. Mr. Zulkifli Hanafi ( Architecture)
  4. Mr. Mohd Zahry Shaikh Abd. Rahman (Building Technology)
  5. Mr. Mohd Zailan Suleiman ( Building Technology)
  6. Dr. Nazirah Zainul Abidin ( Quantity Surveying/ QS)
  7. Dr. Ahmad Paud Mat Som ( Urban & Regional Planning)
  8. Mr. A'zizan Hussain ( Urban & Regional Planning)
  9. Mr. Azizan Marzuki ( Urban & Regional Planning)
  10. Mr. Mohamed Talhah Idrus (Urban 7 Regional Planning)
  11. Dr. Norazmawati Md Sani (Urban & Regional Planning)

  15. Mr. Ilias Said (Construction Management)
  16. Mr. Mohd Hanizun Hanafi ( Construction Management)
  17. Mr. Shardy Abdullah ( Construction Management)
After this event, Mr. Wan wanted us to sign up for our first project entitled "My Home". Everyone moved out the hall to sign up for the project.

After all had signed up, the students returned to the hall. Then, Mr. Wan gave us our first assignment. He showed us the way of doing this assignment and the following were the guidance that he had shown (which I had read too):

  1. Get your own homepage(website), anywhere on www.
  2. Send your URL to:  rus101-2009@googlegroup.com
  3. Fill it up with                                                                                         Content 1:" What I read today, 06 July 2009,0900-1200"                              Content 2:" My Big Bang"
  4. Include your Full name
  5. Deadline: Friday 10 July, 08:00

In addition, Mr. Wan also explained to us what “plagiarism” is by showing us an example. In order to explain furthermore about plagiarism, he had searched online for us to read and the text as follow:

What is Plagiarism?

Many people think of plagiarism as copying another's work, or borrowing someone else's original ideas. But terms like "copying" and "borrowing" can disguise the seriousness of the offense:

According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, to "plagiarize" means

  • to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own
  • to use (another's production) without crediting the source
  • to commit literary theft
  • to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source.

In other words, plagiarism is an act of fraud. It involves both stealing someone else's work and lying about it afterward.

But can words and ideas really be stolen?

According to U.S. law, the answer is yes. The expression of original ideas is considered intellectual property, and is protected by copyright laws, just like original inventions. Almost all forms of expression fall under copyright protection as long as they are recorded in some way (such as a book or a computer file).

All of the following are considered plagiarism:

  • turning in someone else's work as your own
  • copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit
  • failing to put a quotation in quotation marks
  • giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation
  • changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit
  • copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of your work, whether you give credit or not (see our section on "fair use" rules)

Most cases of plagiarism can be avoided, however, by citing sources. Simply acknowledging that certain material has been borrowed, and providing your audience with the information necessary to find that source, is usually enough to prevent plagiarism. See our section on citation for more information on how to cite sources properly.

(The above text is from www.plagiarism.org)

Lastly, Mr. Wan gave us a briefing on what we will be doing in the “My Big Bang!” which was held in the afternoon. The class ended after the briefing.

Well, I think that was what I had read from 0900-1200 on 6 July 2009.

                I supposed ..............................

“My Big Bang!”

  Part 1: 6 July 2009

When I first heard of this program name, the first thing came across my mind was “This is going to be fun!! Haha!! We’re going to play games!” I thought the lecturers will allow us some sort of “big bang”, challenging and interesting games. Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed as soon as the “big bang” program was carried on.

At 2 o’clock, then I realised that “My Big Bang!’ program was conducted by our seniors. It was quite fun to finally meet our seniors. I had been waiting for so long for this. Honestly, all seniors were very friendly and humorous. They showed their sense of humor through their broken English. When they explained to us about the activities that we are going to carry out on this week orientation, they mentioned something funny like ‘pull the rope’. They said the name of the game ‘pull the rope’ instead of tug of war. I was confused and had no idea on what they were talking about. But then I caught the meaning.

After a little briefing on the activities, seniors divided us into three groups. The first group was students that take architecture and quantity surveying; second group were those who are taking urban and regional planning, construction management, and interior design; the third group were those who are taking building technology and building surveying.

Then, all of us were asked to pay RM 36 in order to participate in the orientation program. Since this program was compulsory to everyone, therefore everyone queued up to pay the money to seniors. Some of them who could not join the orientation program started to discuss with the seniors and gave them the reasons. Since the seniors were efficient in handling the problems occurred very well, this session ended very fast.

In conclusion, “My Big Bang!” session ended in about two hours. This program was actually not as surprising as I had thought and also not as superb as Einstein’s “Big Bang theory” (I mean not much surprise). It was just a ordinary briefing on the orientation activities.

Part 2:  9 July 2009

Today, our orientation entitled " My Big Bang" had began. This orientation started with activities such as futsal ,netball and tug of war. Futsal was played by boys while netball played by girls. Unfortunately, tug of war had been canceled due to the raining day. Among all the students of House, building and planning (HBP), the boys and girls make up teams to play these games. Students, who participated in the tug of war, were asked to go to support the futsal team. I felt bad because our team lost, with the score of 5-1(i suppose  because I can't remember the exact  goals scored by our senior squad). The only goal scored by our squad is a friend who came from Iran, Shayan Shahmorad. The games ended at 7 p.m.

Part 3: 10 July 2009

On the morning, we were divided into 16 groups after our Integrated Studio I class by seniors. Then, we were given a briefing about the activities that we going to do today.

Today  as we were told by the seniors, was the opening ceremony for our orientation "My Big Bang!". At 2.30 p.m, all students of House, Building and Planning( HBP) had arrive at Dewan Kuliah E48B. All seniors distributed name tag to all the students. The opening ceremony started with the arrival of Professor Ir. Dr. Mahyuddin Ramli, Dean of HBP.

The ceremony began with "bacaan doa". Then, the ceremony continued with a brief speech from "My Big Bang!" directer, Ahmad Idris. After that, Professor Ir. Dr. Mahyuddin Ramli, Dean of HBP, gave his speech. Dean taught us 6 important principles in his speech. The 6 important principles are 4B and 2P. The 4B stand for image Building, self Building, team Building and capacity Building. Dean said that we must have our own image (image Building), self confident( self Building), group work ( team Building), and have capacity to do something successfully( capacity Building). Furthermore, the 2P stand for Problem solving and future Planning. Dean said that we must learn how to solve man kind problem or global problem( Problem solving) and we must plan a great success future( future Planning).

After dean had finished giving his speech, Dean launched "My Big Bang!". After that, the ceremony ended and everyone back to their own hostel.

At 8.30p.m, all students of HBP gathered at Dataran Merah for the next activity called "Ice breaking". In this activity, all groups have to create a team cheer and built a sculpture by using the materials supplied by seniors. Then, we had to present all of our works in front of the seniors. After a brief discussion, we had decided to name our team as “Sky Begin”, with the meaning of under the same sky, we gathered together and start our journey for our future. After that, we were able to construct our sculpture just by using a few pieces of manila cards and decorated it with maker pens.

The presentation ended at around 12a.m. I still remember it was raining when the program ended. I was totally wet when i reached my hostel room. Haha....

Part 4: 11 July 2009

Today, all of us gathered at Dataran Merah at 10.00 a.m. We sat in groups. Then, we were supplied by a pack of straws, a plastic bag,a pile of old news papers, an egg and ropes. Seniors wanted us to construct a structure than can protect the egg from cracking if we throw it from high building. It sounded very simple, but the challenge was, the structure must be stable enough so that the egg will not crack or even have no scratches on it. My group constructed a cubic container shape structure with a parachute on top of it. We even built some shock-absorbing system under the container and our structure look like as follow:

All of us enjoyed the moment when we built the structure. We showed our co-operation when constructing the structure.

We started to throw our structure which contained egg inside at 3p.m. When it was our turn, we were asked to cheer. Then, I released the structure from the third floor.................... Oh............. Wow!!!  Our egg was secured by the shock-absorbing system of our structure. Yeah!!! Victory for “Sky Begin”.

During the night, we had our program entitled " Explorace". This game started late due to the raining cats and dogs. This was a game that almost like station game. We went station by station. We had to pass the challenges that seniors gave to us. I still remember that these was one station gave us the 10 nails and a piece of wood with a strew on top of it. They wanted us to balance the 10 nails on top of the strew and the nails shall not touched the wood. It sounded easy but actually it was testing our Intelligence Quotient (IQ). These was also a station where seniors wanted us to go through the floor that was full with eggs and flour. Eu........ that was totally disgusting and all the smell...... I really can't stand the smell until now. Haha......... But it was fun to maze around with those things especially with all friends. Unfortunately, we were unable to take photo for this session because we were too busy to think the ways in to pass all the obstacles which set up by seniors. This game ended at 2 a.m ( if I'm not mistaken because I was totally exhausted after the game and I can't remember the exact time. What I know it was dark and late).

Part 5: 12 July 2009

Finally it was the last day of our orientation. Today's activity started on 10 a.m. We gathered at Dataran Merah. All of us had been given a brief talk on what were we going to do on that morning. We were told to practice a performance based on a theme. The theme for our performance was " The Metamorphosis of music era". The performance must be done in group and all the group members must participant in the performance. All groups had to perform their performance during the night event, the grand dinner.

In this activity, my group combined with Group 1. My group planned to performance singing. All of us decided to sing songs from different eras to carried out the theme given. We practiced the performence very hard in order we can be the best on that night.

On the night, all students of House, Building and Planning (HBP) gathered again at Dataran Merah to have our Grand Dinner. Everyone wore mask. The ceremony started with the arrival of Deputy Dean, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aldrin Abdullah. Then, we enjoyed our meal. After the tasty and delicious meal, it was my group's turn to perform. During the performance, I sang solo and my song was Datuk Siti Nurhaliza's song entitled " Bukan Cinta Biasa". Others member sang Malay songs, English song, Chinese song and Thai song. I remember two of my group members sang the Titanic theme song " My Heart will go on", which originally sang by Celine Dion. Our performance was given a big applause from the audiences. We were satisfied with our performance . We also enjoyed other groups' performance too. All of us had a lot of fun.

The ceremony ended with the prizes giving to the winner. After that, the orientation officially ended. But, our life as HBP and University Sains Malaysia ( USM) had just began..............
